Tourist Activity of the Population of the Republic of Croatia

How often domestic people travel, why, where and when they go for trips, how long their trips last and how much money is spent on them are just some of the questions answered in the Survey on Tourist Activity of the Population of the Republic of Croatia.

It is a survey conducted every three months, aimed at collecting data on private and business trips of the population of the Republic of Croatia, in the country and abroad, outside their usual residence, whether the trips are related to visiting relatives and friends, going to the summer house, shopping or skiing, retreating to a spa, or attending an education programme, seminar, etc.

For example, the schedule for January 2024 includes collection of data on trips from which Croatian citizens returned in October, November and December 2023, while respondents who did not go for trips will be asked questions related to the main reasons for not going on trips, such as lack of financial resources, health issues or family or business commitments.

A total of 22 thousand households/individuals were randomly selected in the sample using the database of analogue and mobile phone numbers, who were contacted by interviewers of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and performed the computer-assisted telephone interview with them. The Survey includes persons aged 15 and more years.

The secrecy of collected data is guaranteed by the Regulation No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and the Council on European statistics and by the Official Statistics Act (OG, No. 25/20), which implies that the Croatian Bureau of Statistics processes and releases the data in aggregated form and that it will not be possible to disclose the identity of the person who participated in the Survey from these data.

Pursuant to the Regulation (EU) No 692/2011 concerning European statistics on tourism, all EU Member States are obliged to conduct this Survey applying the same methodology, which enables the comparability of data among the EU Member States. Data for all EU Member States are available on the Eurostat’s website within the tourism section.

The Survey results are implemented in assessing the importance of tourism in the Croatian national economy, in various economic analyses and forecasts, and as a quality background for adopting various policies in the tourism domain. The results of the Survey on Tourist Activity of the Population of the Republic of Croatia are available on the website of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

The results of the Survey on Tourist Activity of the Population of the Republic of Croatia for 2023 will be available on 14 June 2024, while data collection on trips in the first quarter of 2024 is scheduled for as early as April 2024.

The crucial contribution to the Survey is the respondents’ active participation as data providers. Therefore, we invite you, if you have been selected in the sample or if you will be selected to participate in the future Survey, to spare some time and respond to questions. Your responses are needed for developing reliable statistics on trips of persons living in Croatia.
