Household Budget Survey

How much do households spend on food on average? What are the average housing expenditures? How many households have a dishwasher? These are only some of the questions answered in the Household Budget Survey, which is carried out every three years. The most recent one was conducted in the course of 2022 and it included 5 697 households selected using the random sample method.

The Household Budget Survey is aimed at collecting data on socio-economic characteristics of the household, personal consumption expenditures, as well as on housing conditions and durable goods. Survey participants are private households selected by using the random sample method, which combines two ways of participation. A consumption diary, kept by a selected private household for a period of 14 days, is used to collect data on daily expenditures on food, beverages and tobacco, as well as on cleaning/personal hygiene products, newspapers and magazines, while interview is used to collect data on other miscellaneous household expenditures.

The data are implemented in monitoring measures pertaining economic and social policies, analyses of consumer habits and living standard of the population, and for international comparisons.

If your household participated in the 2022 Survey, or if it will be selected in any of the future samples, you do not have to worry, because confidentiality of the information you provide is guaranteed by the Official Statistics Act (OG, Nos 25/20 and 155/23). The data are used only for statistical purposes, and individual information on any household or person is not disclosed. For example, the Household Budget Survey for 2019 provided data that 50.4% of households had a dishwasher, but did not provide precise data on the individual households, due to the fact that the data are released in aggregated form for the whole Republic of Croatia.

The results of the most recent Household Budget Survey conducted in 2022 will be available by the end of April 2024, while a new survey is scheduled for 2026.

We invite you, if you happen to be included in the sample in future surveys, to participate and help us collect data on household expenditures.
