What is a man without a mustache, or Movember without a little statistics?

Towards the International Men's Day

What is a man without a mustache? We have often heard this question, but perhaps it is most often asked in November, a month dedicated to highlighting the importance of men caring for their health, in which we also celebrate International Men's Day. The level of positive reactions to the awareness of these problems received from the public is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that a whole movement called Movember has developed, in which men around the world in November grow a mustache and a beard in support.

Nomen est omen ꟷ so for a start we checked which male names are the most common in Croatia. If we had to single out five of them, then, according to the 2021 Census, these would be the names Ivan, Josip, Marko, Luka and Tomislav. And how many men are there in Croatia? According to the mid-2023 population estimate, men accounted for 48.4% of the population. In the same year, their average age was 42.6 years, while their life expectancy was 75.4 years.

If we concentrate on demographic indicators a little longer, on migration to be more specific, we can notice that men emigrate, but also immigrate, in a large percentage. Perhaps this may be expected, given the fact that men move more often, primarily because of job needs. However, we should also point out that in 2023 the share of immigrated men in the total immigrant population was 68.5%, whereas in the emigrant population it was 63.1%.

And what is the situation if we take a look at the educational structure and the labour market? According to the 2021 Census, the highest number of men had secondary education, 62.4% of them, followed by higher education, 22.2% of them, and only 15.3% had basic education and less. In 2023, they accounted for 53.4% of the total number of persons in employment, while their average net earnings in the same year amounted to 1 184 euro. The largest number of employed men, 168.9 thousand, was engaged in the Manufacturing, while their largest share was recorded in Construction activity, 90.1% to be more specific. Interestingly, it is precisely in this activity section that men had lower earnings than women.

We hope that you will find these selected data about men in Croatia interesting and useful, so we encourage you to forward this text to important men in your life to educate them, but also to have fun and thus congratulate them on their day! For what is Movember without a little statistics?
