Statistics for better development in a fast-changing world
Celebrating the European Statistics Day
In the world of statistics, October means only one thing – celebrating another European Statistics Day. For us in the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, who work on the collection, processing and dissemination of statistical data every day, this day serves as an occasion to reflect on everything done during the year, as well as on the ways in which we can raise the quality of official statistics to an even higher level in the future by providing you, our users, with new, innovative ways of presenting statistics. Furthermore, 20 October is always a good opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of statistics in society, which may often be taken for granted or forgotten. This year’s, the eighth European Statistics day, is held under the motto "Statistics for better development in a fast-changing world", which calls for an even faster and more active response to user needs because, as the European Statistical Advisory Committee points out in its press release, public policies play a central role in sustainable growth and development, and the prerequisite for their effective implementation is the production of new and relevant indicators and reliable data that are quickly and easily available and internationally comparable. At the same time, the producers of official statistics face a new challenge – the emergence of a variety of alternative data sources due to the progress of digitisation and artificial intelligence, which can only be effectively overcome through continuous cooperation and dialogue with the users of statistical data.
In anticipation of this year's European Statistics Day, and taking into account the constant need to adapt to new trends in the presentation of statistical data, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics has developed a new interactive tool for data visualisation – Dashboard. Therefore, from now on, you will be able to view the basic indicators from eight statistical domains, in addition to the tables, in 22 interactive graphs with a total of 35 phenomena, which include data from the past ten years.
And how could we celebrate the European Statistics Day without some statistics about us? A total of 350 First Releases are planned in 2023, and our Customer Relations and Data Protection Department responded to as many as 2 877 user requests in the first nine months of this year. That the interest of the public in statistical data really exists is confirmed by as many as 1.4 million visits to our website in the period from January to September 2023, and the data we produce were mentioned in more than seven thousand media publications in the same period. We try to show that statistics can be fun almost every day on our social networks, where we have published more than 250 posts since the beginning of the year and where our work is followed and supported by more than 30 thousand followers.
And all of this would not be possible without almost 490 hard-working employees of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, who strive every day to produce quality statistical data, following the highest European and international methods and standards. To them, but also to all of you who use statistics in your everyday life, we wish a happy European Statistics Day!
This time, in a bit different format we bring you the story about the fact that statistics are not just numbers and that there are hard-working employees of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics behind each of them, who put a lot of effort into producing quality statistical data. We wish you a happy European Statistics Day with a video There is a story behind every piece of data!
