A discussion held on the accession of the Republic of Croatia to OECD

A delegation of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CBS), led by Lidija Brković, Director General, participated on the meeting of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) held on 17 and 18 June 2024 in Paris.

On the second day of the meeting, a closed session took place focused on the accession of the Republic of Croatia to OECD. The OECD Secretariat presented an Accession Review Report in the field of statistics and provided its conclusions and recommendations.

During the discussion, the Director General presented  Croatian statistical system with a special stress on its powerful legal and infrastructure framework consisting of CBS as a central body and other producers of official statistics, as well as on the role of the Committee for Official Statistics System of the Republic of Croatia. After that, she presented the comprehensive quality management system in CBS and commented on the establishment of the statistical population register. As the most important step towards modernisation of official statistics, she pointed out the creation of the central repository of data and system of business analyses harmonised with data management principles (data stewardship). In conclusion, Director General emphasised some of key achievements pertaining to the modernisation of data collection and dissemination and pointed out the importance of the promotion of official statistics nad statistical literacy. She also expressed her gratitude to all participants in the process of accession.

From the moment of the accession of the Republic of Croatia to OECD, the task of CBS will be to be in charge of the legal and institutional framework for statistics, maintain quality statistical and data infrastructures in line with policies and good practices in OECD member countries and to be integrated to OECD reporting and information systems.

It should be noted that, on 25 January 2022, the OECD Council decided to open negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Croatia, while on 10 June 2022, the Process Plan of the Accession of the Republic of Croatia to OECD was adopted at the ministerial level. The first visit of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy to CBS for the assessment of the national statistical system and official statistics of the Republic of Croatia took place in April 2023 and the second one in February 2024. The main task of these visits was to additionally assess the promptitude of the Croatian statistical system to fulfill the obligations towards OECD.
