Household Budget Survey results carried out in 2022

The data on the amount and structure of expenditures for personal consumption of households, calculated on the basis of the Household Budget Survey carried out in 2022, have been released.

More than a quarter of the household budget is spent on food products

According to the Survey data, expenditures for personal consumption amounted on average to 110 446 kuna a year per household in 2022. The largest share, by expenditure groups, was recorded in expenditures for Food and non-alcoholic beverages, 27.0%, followed by expenditures for Transport, 15.5%, and for Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 14.5%.
Expenditures for Clothing and footwear had a share of 7.2%, for Information and communication of 6.3% and for Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance of 6.2%. All other expenditure groups in total household expenditures participated with shares smaller than 5.0%.

In addition to expenditure data, the Survey also collected data on basic durables available to a household, which showed that in 2022 more than 99% of households were equipped with a refrigerator, TV set and a washing mashine. A car was available in 78.6% of households, microwave oven by 65.1% of households, dish washer by 62.8% of households and air-conditioners by 55.1% of households.

On an annual basis, 54.6 l of milk are consumed per household member

The Survey also collected data on consumed quantities of food products and beverages, which revealed that, in 2022, an annual consumption per household member, e.g., of bread and buns amounted to 42.4 kg, of potatoes (fresh and frozen) to 32.1 kg, of pork 17.6 kg, of milk 54.6 l, of bananas 13.0 kg, of apples 11.6 kg, of refreshments 23.6 l, of beer 17.4 l, etc. The Survey results on consumed quantities do not include the quantities of food products and beverages bought and consumed in hotels and restaurants.

The participants in the Survey were private households selected by random sample method, from whom data on household expenditures were collected on the basis of the consumer expenditure diary and personal interview. The confidentiality of data is guaranteed by the Official Statistics Act (OG, Nos 25/20 and 155/23). It means that the data on a single household are not disclosed, nor is it possible to identify a household or individual who participated in the survey from aggregated data.

Due to the fact that a national currency in the survey year was the Croatian kuna, all data on expenditures were collected and presented in kuna. The structure by expenditure groups is presented according to the new Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose - COICOP 2018 - and, therefore, data for 2022 are not fully comparable with data from previous years due to changes in the classification of main expenditure groups and differences in their coverage.

We express our gratitude to all who participated in the Survey for their contribution in obtaining new and interesting data.

More information on the Survey results are available in the First Release.
