The Library of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics is a special library that collects, processes and permanently keeps the publications of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and statistical publications with data on Croatia. The Library has existed since the very foundation of statistics in Croatia and it was established pursuant to Article 23 of the Instructions on the Scope and Operation of the Council and the Office for National Statistics in Croatia and Slavonia of 2 August 1875:
„In order to nurture statistics scientifically, the Statistical Office shall establish a Library and compile a collection of maps. Since the Library and the collection of maps shall be used by the members of the Statistical Council and the personnel of the Statistical Office, the Statistical Office shall prepare a special instruction on the Library of the Statistical Office.”
The Library is intended primarily for employees of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics to support their work. As a special statistical library, it is also open to the public, thus being involved in the dissemination of statistical publications and data to users.
The Library collection includes publications in the field of statistics and related sciences. In addition to their own publications, a valuable part of the collection are statistical publications from the time of Austria-Hungary, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the Banovina of Croatia. The collection also contains statistical publications of other national statistical offices, as well as publications of international institutions (Eurostat, FAO, WHO, ILO, UNESCO, UN, etc.).
Library materials can be borrowed only by the employees of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, while external users can use statistical publications only in the reading room with the possibility of taking photos and scanning. In the reading room, users have computers at their disposal to search the website of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and to use electronic materials.
