Lidija Brković reappointed as Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics

Director General has an extensive background in statistics, combined with a committed and responsible approach to work

The Government of the Republic of Croatia, at its closed part of the 167th session held on 7 May 2026, appointed Lidija Brković as the Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

This is Lidija Brković's second term at the helm of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and her seventh year as Director General. Her leadership has left a significant positive mark on the work of the institution, which is continuously developing a strong and harmonised statistical system, participating equally with other Member States in the European Statistical System and serving as an example of good practice for other countries.

The progress of the Bureau is visible both at the national and international level, and over the last seven years, the Bureau has successfully responded to numerous challenges and demanding processes. The most prominent among them is an active role in the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Monetary Union and the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the OECD, as well as a successful harmonisation of the Croatian statistical system with the European Statistics Code of Practice 2021 - 2023, which was assessed as very successful.

With her active participation in numerous international conferences, as a panellist and moderator, Lidija Brković continuously promotes the work and examples of good practice of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics within the European Statistical System (ESS) and the wider international community.

Her international recognition is also confirmed by her appointment to the Executive Committee of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) for Europe and Central Asia for the period from 2025 to 2027. In the two-year term, she will represent the IAOS and its core values at the International Statistical Institute (ISI).

Such international recognition has further strengthened the position of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, resulting in the awarding of the hosting rights for two important international conferences.

Last year, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics hosted the DGINS conference - a gathering of heads of national statistical institutes of all EU Member States, and in less than a month, the Bureau will once again host a prestigious international conference, that is, the European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics, organised jointly with Eurostat, under the patronage of the Government of the Republic of Croatia. More than 400 participants from different parts of the world are expected, and applications for participation are still open.

In addition to international cooperation, under the leadership of the Director General, the Bureau has also been actively engaged in a number of national projects, providing support to public sector bodies with knowledge and experience in working with data. Digital transformation is one of the Bureau's key development priorities, including the use of new data sources and advanced technologies. Special emphasis is placed on improving the dissemination of statistical data in user-friendly formats to make access and use as simple and efficient as possible. A new dissemination database is being developed for this purpose.

A fast response to user needs remains one of the Institute's priorities, with a permanent commitment to maintaining a high quality of official statistical data.
