Leading European experts will discuss the application of artificial intelligence in official statistics

The Croatian Bureau of Statistics is hosting the 12th European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics in June 2026

In early June, Šibenik will become a European hub for discussions on how to contribute to the quality of official statistics and ways to improve it - from methodological and organisational solutions, through the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the integration and management of large data sets, to the challenges of digital transformation.

From 3 to 5 June 2026, the 12th European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics will be held at the Convention Centre Šibenik, organised by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and Eurostat, under the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Croatia.

This year's conference, under the slogan “Official Statistics: Enhancing Trust, Shaping the Future”, takes place at a time of the increasing application of new technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. The focus will be on their impact on the quality and transparency of official statistical data and the level of user trust in them, as well as on issues of ethics, communication, quality and the fight against disinformation. The programme includes three thematic areas focused on contemporary challenges in official statistics - the institutional framework for quality management, the impact of new technologies, and strengthening trust in official statistics.

As Lidija Brković, Acting Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, points out, the European statistical community is currently investing great efforts in strengthening “AI readiness”, that is, readiness for the safe and responsible application of artificial intelligence in official statistics. In this context, one of the central topics of the Q2026 conference is dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence in the process of producing statistical data.

The relevance of the topics is evidenced by the great interest of the international statistical community. More than 300 scientific and professional papers were submitted from 58 countries around the world, confirming the global importance of the conference.

Holding the conference in Croatia further confirms the role of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics as an active and important stakeholder in the European statistical community. At the same time, it is a significant recognition and responsibility for the Bureau, as well as an opportunity for Croatia to host one of the most important professional gatherings in this field.

The organising team from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics is particularly proud to have the opportunity to participate in the preparation of such an important and prestigious event. The organisation involves colleagues from various services and departments - from the Graphic Design Unit, the Editorial Board and the Customer Relations and Data Protection Department, to statisticians and IT specialists - who, working together, contribute to the successful organisation of the event.

The European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics is held every two years and is one of the most important gatherings of the European statistical community dedicated to the quality of official statistics. It brings together representatives of national statistical offices, the academic community and international institutions, as well as experts from various fields. The aim is to exchange knowledge and discuss the latest findings and key challenges facing official statistics today.
