The application of artificial intelligence in official statistics - one of the topics at the meeting
Lidija Brković, Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, and Marija Kamenski, Head of the International Relations Department, participated in the regular meeting of the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC), held on 6 February 2026 in Luxembourg.
The Committee discussed several strategically important topics, such as the modernisation of business statistics and international protection statistics, as well as the implementation of Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2009 on European statistics. The Committee also adopted an opinion on agenda items of common interest for the session of the UN Statistical Commission and on the implementation process of the ESA 2010 revision.
On the day before the Committee meeting, 5 February 2026, a high-level meeting on the application of artificial intelligence in official statistics was held, in which the Director General also participated. What will be the elements of AI-readiness on which we need to focus in the years to come? Which should be prioritised? How should the collaboration with stakeholders, including governments, EU bodies, AI-search engines, data holders, be organised? These were some of the questions on which views were exchanged.
