Household Budget Survey to be conducted throughout 2026

We will learn more about consumer habits, expenditures, and housing conditions

How much does a household spend on food on average? What are the average housing expenditures? How many households have an air conditioner? These are some of the questions answered by the Household Budget Survey, which will be conducted throughout 2026. This is a household survey that collects data on the socioeconomic characteristics of household members, personal consumption expenditures, housing conditions, and durable goods.

The Survey includes private households selected by random sampling and combines two modes of participation. A consumption diary, kept by a selected private household for 14 days, is used to collect data on daily expenditures on food, beverages and tobacco, as well as products for personal hygiene and household cleaning, newspapers and magazines. An interview is used to collect data on other miscellaneous household expenditures (such as housing and utility costs, clothing and footwear, transport, and other goods and services for personal household consumption).
The data are used as a basis for making decisions and adopting measures related to economic and social policy, for analysing consumer habits and the population’s standard of living, for informing the general public about the level and structure of consumption of private households in the Republic of Croatia, and for international comparisons.
The Survey is a mandatory survey conducted by all Member States of the European Union, harmonised with the regulations of the European Parliament and of the Council and with Eurostat methodology.

Guaranteed confidentiality of data

If your household has been included in the sample, there is no need to worry, as the confidentiality of your data is guaranteed. The data are used exclusively for statistical purposes, and no information about individual households is disclosed. For example, the 2022 Household Budget Survey showed that 55.1% of households had an air conditioner, but not which specific households, due to the fact that the data are released in aggregated form for the entire Republic of Croatia.

Take part and help us obtain data on household consumption. Your participation is of vital importance for the successful implementation of the survey, as only in this way can the Croatian Bureau of Statistics collect relevant data on household consumption.
