Meetings of the CES and the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy were held in Geneva

Misuse of data, misinformation, artificial intelligence, migration and mobility of people - some of the key topics

The 73rd plenary session of the Conference of European Statisticians was held from 16 to 18 June in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Croatian Bureau of Statistics was represented by the Director General, Lidija Brković, and the Secretary to the Director General's Office, Ivana Aljinović.

During the conference, strategic guidelines for the work of statistical offices, the modernization of official statistics, statistics on migration and population mobility, as well as the statistical response to disinformation and data misuse were discussed. Participants also exchanged experiences on the challenges of conducting surveys and considered the development of effective contact and cooperation strategies in data collection. Recommendations for the 2030 Censuses of Population and Housing, which are published every ten years by the CES, were also presented.

Immediately following the conclusion of the CES, on 18 and 19 June, the 22nd meeting of the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy was held. The session was opened by the OECD Chief Statistician and Director of the Statistics and Data Directorate (SDD), Steve MacFeely, and the discussions were divided into nine thematic sessions.

One of the central topics was artificial intelligence, which is playing an increasingly important role in economies and digital transformation. The discussion sought to answer the questions to what extent "AI readiness" coincides with good statistical practice and where deviations occur. National statistical offices and international organisations were called upon to adapt their frameworks and statistical products to make the most of the potential of AI, while mitigating the associated pitfalls, in particular the potential for missed use and misuse of statistics.

Two important meetings brought together representatives of the international statistical community and national statistical offices to jointly discuss strategic priorities and current topics in the field of official statistics.
