The best young statisticians awarded

8th Statistical Competition awards ceremony held

The awards ceremony for the best young statisticians took place on Friday, 4 April 2025, rounding off another statistical story in the 2024/2025 season. Excitement, glowing faces, disbelief - all this marked this year’s awards ceremony, as the awarded students did not know who had won until the very announcement of the winners.

In the category A, where the 3rd and 4th grades of secondary schools competed, the first place was won by the SVILENA team from Vukovar Grammar School under the mentorship of professor Nataša Vinković, while silver medals were placed around the necks of girls from the TRICEPS team from the I Grammar School, Zagreb, under the mentorship of professor Gordana Sekulić Štivčević. The absolute dominance of girls in the eighth season of the Statistical Competition was only slightly "distorted" by the bronze team 505TREND from Josip Slavenski Grammar School, Čakovec, under the mentorship of Tamara Srnec, who hid in her ranks the only awarded male student among all the winners.

Teams from almost the whole of Croatia found their place among the top ten presentations in both categories in which the winners were selected in the end, which proves that students across Croatia show a great interest in statistics and that they have excellent handling of statistical data. In the category A, continental Croatia proved to be superior, while the first-awarded team in the category B, in which 1st and 2nd grade high school students competed, proved that the southern part of Croatia does not lag behind. In this category, the winner was the SIRENA team, whose mentor was Ivana Supičić from the Maritime School Zadar. The eighth season of the Statistical Competition was definitely fortunate for mentor Tamara Srnec, who, together with her other team - VREČKA, managed to win the silver award in this category as well, while the bronze medal went to the students from the ROLERI team from the Varaždin Medical School under the mentorship of professor Mirela Brumec.

In addition to the grades awarded by the expert jury, one team from each category also received public recognition for their efforts. In the category B, with a total of 22.5% of the collected votes, the public considered the presentation of the ANAMARILAN team from the Vukovar Grammar School under the mentorship of Professor Suzana Osička to be the best, while the public award in the category A was won by the TRIOSONATA team from the XV Grammar School under the mentorship of Professor Marina Ninković, with a total of 30% of the votes.

These are students who are primarily motivated by the desire to embrace challenges and push their own boundaries. In order for their efforts not to be in vain, the main prize was taken care of by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and the Competition’s partners: HalPet, Decathlon, Podravka, SRCE and Sofascore.

A total of 424 teams from 88 schools across Croatia applied in the eighth season of the Statistical Competition, and a total of 1 109 students participated under the guidance of 132 mentors, from almost all counties. If we take into account the fact that as many as 166 teams went to the second round of the competition, then it is clear that these eight awarded teams are really special and deserve a big - bravo!
