Focus on statistics on climate change

On 16 and 17 January 2025, a conference of the European Statistical Forum was held in Brussels, bringing together the heads of the national statistical offices of the European Statistical System, the directors of the statistics of the national central banks of the Member States of the European Union and other relevant experts. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics was represented by Lidija Brković, Director General, and Marija Kamenski, Head of the International Relations Department.

The theme of the conference was "Closing the data gaps on climate change” and discussions were focused on efforts to improve climate change statistics. In her opening speech, Mariana Kotzeva, Director-General of Eurostat, stressed the importance of data collection and analysis in the fight against climate change and the role of official statistics in decision-making based on accurate information Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, also addressed the participants.

Key aspects of the work on establishing national factors for energy-related emissions and reducing the carbon footprint were presented at the conference.

Among other things, indicators of green private investment, public expenditure on climate change mitigation and the challenges of measuring climate change adaptation expenditure as well as steps to be taken in the future were discussed, with special attention paid to climate change risk indicators.

On the sidelines of the European Statistical Forum conference, a meeting was held with Irena Andrassy, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union. The aim of the meeting was to get acquainted with the work plans related to legislative procedures in the EU Council and to exchange information and views on legislative acts currently under discussion or to be discussed in the Council in 2025.
