The Expert Group on Measuring Sustainability of Tourism also held the meeting
The Spanish capital saw the
20th Meeting of the UN Committee on Statistics and the
5th Meeting of the Expert Group on Measuring Sustainability of Tourism in the UN Tourism Headquarters, held from 1 to 3 October 2024 and attended by Lidija Brković, the Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.
The Director General participated in the discussion of measuring the sustainability of tourism and successful examples of good practice in that sector, in the context of which she emphasised the importance of a new
Tourism Act, which includes a framework for managing the development of tourism in Croatia in line with sustainability principles. In particular, the Act provides tools for observing this sector in economy, such as tourism development index, tourism satellite accounts and sustainability indicators, and prescribes measures for achieving a long-term sustainability of Croatian tourist destinations. At the same time, the cooperation among all relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, tourist boards, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and the Scientific and Professional Council whose establishing is foreseen in the Act, is highly encouraged.
In addition, the Director General pointed out the importance of tourism in the global economy, emphasizing the sector's significant impact on Croatia’s economy, where tourism accounts for 11.3% of total gross value added, which means that Croatia’s economy has the highest share in the total value added among all EU Member States. She also highlighted Croatia's efforts in advancing tourism statistics, stressing the pivotal importance of reliable data in policymaking aimed at fostering sustainable and resilient tourism globally.
