Heads of statistical offices of the European Statistical System attended a high-level meeting

Three key pillars of the new ESS Vision as main points of discussion

As part of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, on 12 and 13 September 2024 in Balatonfüred, a meeting of heads of statistical offices of the European Statistical System (ESS) was held on the topic “Towards an ESS Vision 2030”, which was attended by Lidija Brković, The Director-General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

The meeting discussed a possible common ESS Vision, its format, time horizon, potential objectives and key elements it could include. The main points of discussion were three key pillars of the new Vision - data, methods and operation pillar.

The Director-General moderated a session dedicated to the relevance of statistical data, addressing the production of data aligned with increasing user needs, the mechanisms for determining priorities as well as the priority areas for data. Since this is a strategic issue that requires an analysis of current procedures in the process of data collection, processing and publishing, the need for constant communication between all participants of this process, including users, data providers, technical support for the data integration system and authors of the legal framework, was particularly emphasized.

The principle of relevance is one of the 16 quality principles of the European Statistical System, and it determines the degree to which the statistical product meets user needs in terms of content and coverage. All the principles are included in the statistical standard called the European Statistics Code of Practice. Its purpose is to allow for the statistics produced within the ESS to be based on the same quality principles. The quality of statistical products and services is extremely important for the production of official statistics and a permanent commitment of the CBS, which will be continuously worked on and improved.
