ILO unemployment rate was 5.5%
It is estimated that there were 1 643 thousand employed persons in the Republic of Croatia in the first quarter of 2024, which was an increase of 61 thousand, or 3.8%, as compared to the first quarter of 2023. In the same reference period, the number of unemployed persons in the Republic of Croatia amounted to 96 thousand, which was a decrease of 29 thousand, or 23.4%, as compared to the first quarter of 2023.
The employment rate was the highest in the City of Zagreb and the lowest in Pannonian Croatia
In the first quarter of 2024, the employment rate of persons aged 15 to 64 years was 68.0%, which was an increase of 3.4 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2023. The ILO unemployment rate of persons aged 15 to 64 years was 5.5%, which was 1.9 percentage points less than in the same reference period last year.
The highest employment rate was recorded in the City of Zagreb, 74.4%, while in Pannonian Croatia it was the lowest at 62.7%.
The lowest ILO unemployment rate of 2.5% was present in the City of Zagreb, while the highest one was recorded in Adriatic Croatia (7.6%).
Registered unemployment rate was higher than ILO unemployment rate
Along with the ILO unemployment rate, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics also releases the registered unemployment rate. The comparison of data on unemployed persons obtained from the Labour Force Survey and those obtained from the Croatian Employment Service (CES) and other statistical monitoring based on administrative sources shows that, in the first quarter of 2024, the registered unemployment rate according to the administrative registers’ data (6.6%) was higher than the ILO unemployment rate (5.5%).
Working-age population amounted to 3 250 thousand
Data from the Labour Force Survey also show that, in the first quarter of 2024, the working-age population (aged 15 years and over) amounted to 3 250 thousand, of which 1 739 thousand persons were active (the sum of employed and unemployed persons) and 1 511 persons were inactive.
Regarding reasons of inactivity, 1 080 persons (or 71.5%) were inactive due to age, illness, education etc., followed by 64 thousand persons (or 4.2%) who want to work but did not seek job, and 4 thousand persons (or 0.2%) who seek job but cannot accept it in the next two weeks. The remaining 364 thousand persons (or 24.1%) were inactive persons aged 75 years and over who are, according to the methodology, not asked in detail about reasons for their inactivity.
