5 689 more deaths than a year ago
In 2021, as compared to the previous year, an increase of 1.8% was recorded in the number of live births, that is, 663 more children were born than in 2020. Out of the total of 36 508 live births, 18 968, or 52.0%, were boys and 17 540, or 48.0%, were girls. The live birth rate (live births per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2021 was 9.4.
In 2021, the number of deaths increased compared to the previous year, that is, 5 689 persons deceased, or 10.0% more than in the previous year. Out of the total number of deaths (62 712) in 2021, there were 31 137, or 49.7%, men and 31 575, or 50.3%, women. The death rate (deaths per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2021 was 16.1.
In all counties, the natural increase was negative
The natural increase rate in 2021 in the Republic of Croatia was negative at -6.7 (-26 204 persons). The negative natural increase was also confirmed by the vital index (live births per 100 deaths), which amounted to 58.2. The negative natural increase rate was recorded in all counties, with the highest one being recorded in the City of Zagreb, as much as -2 932, with a vital index of 73.3. A positive natural increase was recorded in 25 towns/municipalities and a negative one in 530 towns/municipalities and in the City of Zagreb.
18 203 couples started their marriage life
In 2021, there were 18 203 marriages. The marriage rate (marriages per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2021 was 4.7. On the other hand, there were 5 100 final court decisions related to divorces, which means that the divorce rate (divorces per 1 000 inhabitants) was 1.3 in 2021. The number of divorces per 1 000 marriages amounted in 2021 to 280.2.
