World Statistics Day
We have been producing quality statistical data for 150 years
How many libraries are there in the Republic of Croatia? What were the average monthly net earnings in 2024? How many new PhDs were awarded? And how many residents of the Republic of Croatia travelled abroad last year? The answers to these and many other questions are, of course, provided by official statistics. To implement effective public policies, make informed business decisions, or carry out scientific research, decisions must be based on reliable data. That is why, on World Statistics Day, we remind you of the importance and availability of high-quality statistical data.Back in 2010, the United Nations launched World Statistics Day with the aim of encouraging cooperation between countries and highlighting the importance of official statistics. Every five years, on 20 October, statistical offices around the world join forces to bring statistics closer to citizens in every corner of the planet. This year’s slogan is "Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone". The message is clear - reliable data should be available to all.
In today’s world, where information is created and disseminated faster than ever, it is important to rely on relevant and verified data sources. That is why official statistics play a key role - they provide accurate, reliable, and high-quality statistical data that support informed decision-making, policies development and planning for the future. The goal is to make statistics accessible and understandable to everyone - from pupils and students to entrepreneurs, journalists, and citizens. Because when we understand data, we understand the world around us more easily.
Paying attention to the user needs, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics collects, processes, and disseminates data from as many as 16 statistical areas. In 2025 alone, a total of 362 First Releases, more than 600 individual tables, 173 databases, 179 STS databases, and eight Statistical Reports are planned. In addition to the websites, which are the main communication channel for disseminating statistical data, we also actively use social media to bring statistics closer to the general public in an understandable and accessible way. We particularly highlight Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, with a total of 30 thousand followers, where we publish visually engaging infographics and data related to everyday topics, as well as updates on our activities, almost every day.
This year, in addition to celebrating World Statistics Day, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics is also marking 150 years of Croatian statistics. It all began back in 1875 with the founding of the National Statistical Office. Since then, generations of statisticians and experts have dedicated their knowledge and efforts to producing reliable data that shape our everyday lives. Over those 150 years, statistics have become an indispensable tool for understanding society.
To mark this important anniversary, in September we organised an outdoor exhibition on Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square in Zagreb. Anyone who was unable to visit the exhibition in person can still view it on the website of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics. There, you can also explore our Timeline, which presents some of the most important moments in the history of Croatian statistics, read interesting facts about the founding of the National Statistical Office, or find out who Milovan Zoričić was in the Articles section.
In line with the slogan of this year's World Statistics Day, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics continues to put users at the centre of its work. Our mission is clear: to provide accurate, reliable, and high-quality data that are accessible to everyone. Whether you are a scientist, journalist, student, decision-maker, or simply a citizen who wants to better understand the world around you - official statistics are here for you.
And none of this would be possible without the more than 500 dedicated employees of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, who produce high-quality statistical data every day in accordance with the highest European and international standards. We wish them - and all of you for whom statistics are a part of everyday life - a happy World Statistics Day!
