The United Nations Statistical Commission holds its 56th session
Statistical experts on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
This week, from 4 to 7 March 2025, the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission is taking place in New York, bringing together experts and representatives from Member States from around the world to discuss the most important statistical issues and challenges facing modern society. The United Nations Statistical Commission, composed of the heads of the national statistical institutes of the Member States of the United Nations, is the highest body of the international statistical system with the right to decide on matters of international statistical activity, in particular the setting of statistical standards, the development of concepts and methods, and their implementation at national and international level.
This year's session, attended by Lidija Brković, Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, discusses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), i.e. data and indicators for the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Agenda 2030). The 2030 Agenda underlines the importance of putting in place robust frameworks to monitor progress towards the realisation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Supporting the 2030 Agenda, the global SDG indicator framework plays a key role in providing the data needed for evidence-based policymaking, promoting transparency and fostering accountability at local, national and global levels.
The session also discussed the improvement of data quality in various statistical domains, the digitalisation and modernisation of statistical systems, the strengthening of the capacity of official statistics and the fundamental principles of official statistics.
The conclusions of the session will underpin future Commission activities and cooperation between Member States, international organisations and other stakeholders in the statistical system, aimed at strengthening the capacity of the statistical system at global level and providing quality statistics.
