Ice cream, beaches, vacation... Hello, summer!

If you're a certified summer lover, your favourite time of year has officially begun. We're talking endless sunshine, warm evenings, outdoor hangouts, lazy days on the beach, and refreshing dips in the sea, river, or lake - all the best parts of the hottest season. And if you're not a fan of the heat, actively dodging the sun and seeking ways to cool down, we've got something for you too. To kick off the season, we're serving up a summer to-do list with a splash of statistics!

1. First things first: protect your skin!

While skincare matters all year round, the moment those stronger summer rays hit, we're all reminded just how powerful the sun can be — and just how sensitive our skin really is. To avoid slathering on yogurt at night or experimenting with old-school sunburn remedies, there's one golden rule: apply sunscreen daily during the summer, especially if you're planning to spend time outdoors. And don't forget to wrap up your sun-soaked day with a good dose of skin hydration. While we're no experts in dermatology, we do have the latest trade statistics: in 2024, we imported EUR 200.0 million worth of sunscreen and skincare products - mostly from France, Germany, and Ireland. And this is not just one-way traffic: we also exported EUR 143.0 million worth of these products, mostly to Serbia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

2. Kick off the ice cream season

Some people enjoy it all year round, while for others, it's the ultimate symbol of summer. On a stick, in a cone, or in a cup… vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio - the choices are endless, but let's face it: no summer dessert beats ice cream! And yes, it's now officially allowed in all forms and flavours. For many, ice cream from domestic production is the favourite kind - so let's take a scoop into recent trends and see how its production has been looking over the past few years.

3. Cool off with a splash!

Yes, we know: the sea isn't just "water." But when the sea isn't nearby, diving into a river, lake, or pool is just as refreshing - and for some, even better than swimming in the sea. That perfect summer chill, lounging in the shade with the sound of cicadas buzzing or the gentle murmur of a river, will quickly bring everyone into balance. So, grab your swimsuit and head to the beach!

Whether it's new or old, a bikini, one-piece, briefs, or trunks - it doesn't matter. In 2023 alone, we produced a whopping 3.8 million pieces of swimwear, with women's leading the way (3 821 480 women's and just 1 636 men’s). We also import swimwear: in 2024, we imported a total of 18 843 857 pieces and, not too surprisingly, most of them came from Italy.

4. Put on your sunglasses, pour yourself something refreshing, and enjoy!

For some, sunglasses are a fashion statement; for others, an absolute must-have for protection - why not both? Summer is the season when nearly everyone will pop them on their head or toss them in their bag. Fun fact: in 2024, we imported 2.5 million pairs, mostly from Germany. There's no accounting for taste - whether you prefer cat-eye, aviator, or those classic John Lennon-style shades, sunglasses are the perfect accessory for any face.

And once your shades and swimsuit are on, and all your beach gear is ready, the only thing left is to kick back and pour yourself a refreshing drink. In 2023, we produced 4 495 923 hl of these. Of course, these drinks offer the perfect break we all need during the workday as well.

5. During a heatwave, crank up the AC!

Don't make the rookie mistake of sitting directly under an air conditioner blasting a chilly 18°C - unless you want to swap your refreshing drinks and cocktails for throat lozenges, herbal teas and tissues! Those are definitely best saved for the colder months.

The key, as with everything, is moderation. During a heatwave, cool your space wisely and spend the hottest part of the day well away from the sun. Luckily, air conditioners from domestic production can help you out - in 2023, we produced a total of 1 263 units. And judging by trade data, air conditioners aren't just cooling homes, shops, and offices - they're also popular in transport containers and trucks. In 2024, we imported air conditioners worth EUR 117.1 million, while exporting EUR 36.5 million worth.

Bonus: If you can, take a trip!

Changing up your routine and refreshing your daily life with a getaway is great practice all year round - but it's especially popular in the summer months. Tourism statistics for 2024 back this up: Croatian residents took 2.2 million private multi-day trips in June, July, and August alone, making up 40.3% of all private multi-day trips recorded last year. August was the hottest month for these trips, with most travellers opting to explore destinations within Croatia rather than going abroad.

Whether it's a weekend, a few days, or even weeks, pack your bags and make sure to visit at least one destination outside your hometown this summer!
