Prizes awarded to the winners of the sixth edition of the Statistics Competition

Almost 1 300 students and 50 mentors from a total of 48 secondary schools across Croatia gathered in 475 teams – these are the numbers that speak in favour of the fact that interest in statistics and the Statistics Competition has not faded away for the sixth year in a row. And after several months of struggle in the first and the second round of the Competition, more precisely, solving tasks related to the general knowledge of statistics and understanding of statistical texts, searching databases and, at the end, preparing presentations based on a given dataset, the winners are finally awarded.

The first prize in category A − 3rd and 4th grades of secondary school – went to a well-known address – Electromechanical School Varaždin, to team DOKTORI. Team GAVRAN from the First Gymnasium in Varaždin, which won the second place, confirmed that Varaždinians have a flair for statistics, while the third prize went somewhat further west − to team STAT3TIMRI from the Secondary School of Economics “Mijo Mirković” Rijeka.

As for category B − 1st and 2nd grades of secondary school, the first prize was won by team FJ from the Secondary School Novska, the second place went to team MINISTRICE from the Secondary School of Economics Velika Gorica, while the third place was awarded to team LIMETA from the Medical School Varaždin.

Team FJ from Novska has a special reason for happiness and satisfaction because, in addition to winning the first place in category B, they also won the affection of the wider audience with their imaginative presentation and won the Public Choice Award. In category A, team KABACCO from the Fifteenth Gymnasium in Zagreb managed to win this.

Such great results can only be a reflection of the desire to acquire knowledge, however, valuable prizes were certainly additional motivation for the students and their mentors. The smiles on their faces are due to our partners: the University Computing Centre SRCE, Decathlon and OTP Bank, who recognised the value of this Competition and support us year after year.

We are very happy about the fact that the value of promoting statistical literacy has been recognised by an extremely large number of young people who will soon become active participants in the society and affect the creation of various policies and measures. In order to know how and be able to use their voice for a better future of all of us in a correct way, it is important that, among other things, they know how to use statistics. It is precisely one of the main goals of this Competition, which is carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Education and in cooperation with the Agency for Science and Higher Education, with the intention of introducing statistics to schoolchildren in an interesting and innovative way and awakening in them a love for this scientific discipline that accompanies us throughout our lives.

To all the students and their mentors – thank you for your effort and now get some rest, you deserve it! We hope to see you in the next season in the same, if not in a greater number!
