Prices of goods and services in May 2023 higher by 7.9% at the annual level

The highest increase in consumer prices recorded in the division Food and non-alcoholic beverages

In May 2023, compared to May 2022 (at the annual level), the prices of goods and services for personal consumption, measured by the consumer price index, increased by 7.9% on average, while compared to April 2023 (at the monthly level), they increased by 0.5% on average.
 
Observing the main divisions of the ECOICOP classification, at the annual level, the highest increase on average in consumer prices was recorded in the following divisions: Food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as Restaurants and hotels, of 15.1% in each division (contribution to the growth of +4.01 percentage points in the division Food and non-alcoholic beverages and of +0.76 percentage points in the division Restaurants and hotels), Miscellaneous goods and services, of 11.0% (+0.69percentage points), Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, of 10.4% (+0.60 percentage points), Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, of 7.5% (+1.27 percentage points), Clothing and footwear, of 7.3% (+0.45 percentage points), Recreation and culture, of 7.2% (+0.38 percentage points), Health, of6.7% (+0.21 percentage points), and Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, of 5.8% (+0.29 percentage points). The increase in prices at the annual level was alleviated by a decrease in the prices in the division Transport, of 4.8% (contribution to the decrease of -0.67 percentage points).
 
At the monthly level, the highest increase on average was recorded in the divisions Food and non-alcoholic beverages, of 1.6% (contribution to the growth of +0.42 percentage points), Recreation and culture, of 1.4% (+0.07 percentage points), Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, of 1.2% (+0.07 percentage points), Health, of 0.8% (+0.03 percentage points), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, Restaurants and hotels as well as Miscellaneous goods and services, of0.7% in each division (contribution to the growth of +0.04 percentage points in each division), and Clothing and footwear, of 0.5% (+0.03 percentage points). The increase in prices at the monthly level was alleviated by a decrease of the prices in the divisions Transport, of 1.0% (contribution to the decrease of -0.14 percentage points), Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels as well as Communication, of 0.5% in each division (-0.08 percentage points in the division Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and -0.03 percentage points in the division Communication).
 
According to the main components of index (special aggregates), at the annual level, an increase in prices was recorded in the components Food, beverages and tobacco, of 13.6%, Non-food industrial goods without energy, of 8.4%, and Services, of 8.0%. A decrease in prices was recorded in the component Energy, of 3.2%. At the monthly level, an increase in prices was recorded in the components Food, beverages and tobacco, of 1.4%, and Non-food industrial goods without energy as well as Services, of 0.7% in each component, while a decrease in prices was recorded in the component Energy, of 2.0%.
 
In May 2023, compared to May 2022 (at the annual level), the prices of goods and services for personal consumption, measured by the harmonised index of consumer prices, increased by 8.3% on average, while compared to April 2023 (at the monthly level), they increased by 0.6% on average.
