"Manual on Child-Specific Data Capacity-Strengthening" published

Director General participated in a panel on the importance of official statistics and the challenges of disaggregating data in national statistical systems

Lidija Brković, Director General of Croatian Bureau of Statistics, and Ivana Aljinović, Head of the Director General's Office, are participating in an event marking the launch of "The Manual on Child-Specific Data Capacity-Strengthening", which is taking place in Athens on 20 and 21 November 2023. The event is organised by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) with the support of the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC).

Migration and displacement affect the lives of children around the world and according to the latest data, it is estimated that 35.5 million of migrants are children. Reliable data and official statistics are key to fulfilling the international obligations that protect the rights of migrant and exiled children. Guided by this thought, the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC) has produced "The Manual on Child-Specific Data Capacity-Strengthening", to help countries to advance the collection, analysis, sharing and use of data on children on the move. The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) participated in the coordination of the compilation of this Manual, which provides analytical guidelines for national statistical institutes and relevant actors on how to build capacities for data collection on children on the move in accordance with the fundamental principles of official statistics.

On the first day of the event, the Director General participated in a panel on the topic "The importance of official statistics and the challenges of disaggregating data in national statistical systems", where she spoke about why official statistics are important when it comes to data on children on the move and, together with other participants, discussed the best practices of countries that can be adopted to improve the efficiency of official statistics and disaggregation of data on children on the move.

Since its founding in 2020, the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC) has been making an effort to improve data and support evidence-based policy-making related to the protection of children on the move. IDAC is a cross-sectoral global coalition jointly led by Eurostat, International Organization of Migration (IOM), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
