Increase of retail trade in September 2023 by 5.5% year-on-year

Highest increase of retail trade year-on-year since April 2022

In September 2023, compared to the same month of the previous year, the working-day adjusted retail trade turnover increased in real terms by 5.5%, which is the highest increase since April 2022, when that increase was 5.6%. Out of that, the retail trade turnover of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 4.4%, while the retail trade turnover of non-food products (except for automotive fuels and lubricants) decreased by 2.5%.

In September 2023, the total seasonally and working-day adjusted deflated retail trade turnover of all business entities engaged in this activity, irrespective of their main activity, was in real terms 2.1% higher than in August 2023. Out of that, the retail trade turnover of food products increased by 1.5%, while the retail trade turnover of non-food products (except for automotive fuels and lubricants) increased by 1.6%.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, 10 trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, while only one trade branch recorded a decrease in September 2023 as compared to the same month of the previous year.

The largest impact on the increase in the nominal turnover in September 2023 compared to the same month of the previous year, according to gross, unadjusted indices, was recorded in the following trade branches: Non-specialised stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating, with a rise in turnover of 14.7% and an impact on the total turnover of 5.3%, Automotive fuels and lubricants with a rise in turnover of 15.6% and an impact on the total turnover of 3.2%, Dispensing chemists, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, with a rise in turnover of 19.4% and an impact on the total turnover of 1.4%, and Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, with a rise in turnover of 32.6% and an impact on the total turnover of 1.0%. Accordingly, the total gross retail trade turnover increased in nominal terms by 13.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.
