In 2021, there were 82% more tourist arrivals and 72% more tourist nights than in 2020
Towns in the County of Istria recorded the most tourist nights; during 2021, Germans were the most numerous foreign tourists
In 2021, there were 12.8 million tourist arrivals in commercial accommodation establishments and 70.2 million tourist nights, which was 82.5% more arrivals and 72.1% more nights than in 2020.Domestic touris arrivals increased by 46.6% and nights by 35.8%, as compared to 2020. Foreign tourists realised 91.9% more arrivals and 77.6% more nights in 2021, as compared to 2020.
The most foreign tourist nights in 2021 were realised by tourists from Germany (31.7%), Poland (10.0%), Slovenia (9.7%), Austria (9.0%), the Czech Republic (7.6%) and Hungary (3.6%). All mentioned countries recorded a two-digit increase in tourist arrivals and nights in 2021 compared to 2020.
Tourist outcomes in 2021 were significantly better compared to 2020, but worse than in 2019. Domestic tourists returned with only 3.5% less tourist arrivals, but with 3.6% more tourist nights than in 2019. Arrivals of foreign tourists decreased in 2021 by 38.7% and nights by 25.3%, as compared to 2019.
What were the most popular destinations?
Towns with the most tourist nights in 2021 were Rovinj, Poreč, Medulin and Umag.
Foreign tourist spent the most nights in Rovinj and domestic tourists in the City of Zagreb.
An increase in both tourist arrivals and nights in 2021, as compared to 2020, was recorded in all groups of commercial accommodation. The largest number of tourist nights was realised in the group Holiday and other short-stay accommodation, as much as 37.0 million nights, i.e., almost 53% of the total number of tourist nights were realised in this group. This was followed by tourist nights realised in Camping sites and camping grounds with 17.5 million nights, which accounted for 24.9% of the total number of tourist nights. However, as compared to 2019, only the group Camping sites and camping grounds got closer to the pre-pandemic outcomes (-11.7% of arrivals and -8.7% of nights), which was expected due to the fact that this type of accommodation allows for a better social distancing for tourists.
In 2021, the accommodation services were provided to tourists by 9 218 accommodation establishments and 94 108 households, which was 7.0% more establishments and 3.8% more households than in 2020. Compared to 2019, there were still fewer accommodation establishments running business, in particular, 3.7% less establishments and 9.7% less households.
