In 2021, a total of 35 912 persons immigrated to the Republic of Croatia, while 40 424 persons emigrated from it

The largest number immigrants arrived from Bosnia and Herzegovina, while most persons emigrated to Germany

In 2021, a total of 35 912 persons immigrated to the Republic of Croatia and 40 424 persons emigrated from it. The Republic of Croatia had a negative net migration with foreign countries, which amounted to -4 512.
In 2021, a total of 29.6% of Croatian citizens and 70.4% of aliens immigrated into the Republic of Croatia, while 64.2% of Croatian citizens and 35.8% of aliens emigrated abroad.

Persons aged 20 – 39 emigrated abroad, but also migrated within the borders of the Republic of Croatia

Out of the total number of immigrants, 22.4% of persons arrived from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Out of the total number of emigrants from the Republic of Croatia, most of them emigrated to Germany (32.3%).
With regard to sex structure, there were more men (72.7%) in the total number of immigrants. Out of the total number of emigrants, there were also more men (63.5%). The largest number of persons who emigrated abroad were aged 20 − 39 (45.8%).
In 2021, there were 71 864 persons who changed their place of residence within the Republic of Croatia.

The largest number of persons who migrated within the Republic of Croatia were aged 20 − 39 (45.9%), while the share of women in the total number of persons who migrated was 54.6%.
Within the total number of persons who migrated on the territory of the Republic of Croatia in 2021, the largest number of persons (40.5%) migrated between counties, 38.5% of persons migrated between towns/municipalities of the same county and 21.0% of persons migrated between settlements of the same town/municipality.

The largest positive total net migration was recorded in the County of Zagreb

The largest positive total net migration of population in 2021 (the difference between the total number of immigrants from another county and abroad, and the total number of emigrants to another county and abroad) was recorded in the County of Zagreb (1 746 persons). The largest negative total net migration of population was recorded in the County of Slavonski Brod-Posavina (-1 268 persons), the County of Vukovar-Sirmium (-1 261 persons) and the County of Osijek-Baranja (-1 222 persons).
