The ninth day of May is an opportunity to remember the beginnings of the European Union back in 1950, when Robert Schuman, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs, in his historic speech presented his idea of establishing a new political community, the aim of which was to ensure a long-lasting peace among Member States.

The Europe Day was established pursuant to a decision of the Council of Europe in 1985 and has been celebrated every year since then as a reminder of preserving lasting peace and unity. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics joined the celebration by presenting some demographic and economic indicators, both for the European Union and Croatia.
