Director General Lidija Brković participated in the "In Data We Trust?" panel

The panel addressed the issue of trust in data in the age of artificial intelligence, as well as the importance of sources, methodology, and the responsible use of information.

The "In Data We Trust?" panel took place on 26 September 2026, as part of the 19th Weekend Media Festival in Rovinj, and featured Lidija Brković, Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

During the panel discussion, the Director General spoke about trust in data, the importance of statistical literacy and methodology, and the growing need for timely data in an environment where artificial intelligence provides answers in mere seconds.

"Behind every data point from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics stand experts, established methodology, verified sources, and a quality management system based on the European Statistics Code of Practice. Our results must be relevant, accurate, timely, comparable, publicly accessible, and produced with professional independence and impartiality. Artificial intelligence can accelerate analysis, but it does not assume responsibility for the credibility of the results. That responsibility remains with the institution and its experts," the Director General stated.



She emphasised that methodology is not merely a technical addition to data but an integral part of it, as it determines the definitions, scope, source, and boundaries of its interpretation. She added that trust in data is built not only on data quality but also on users' ability to understand and interpret data correctly, and that statistical literacy is therefore more important than ever.



Joining Director General Lidija Brković on the panel were Tony Beretini, Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Burai, and Marko Porobija from the law firm Porobija & Špoljarić.
