DGINS conference in Cork brings together heads of European statistics

Challenges and opportunities for official statistics in context of climate change and energy crisis 

The Croatian delegation to the Conference of the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes (DGINS), which is taking place in Cork, Ireland, on 18 – 19 October 2023, includes Lidija Brković, Director-General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, Marija Kamenski, Head of the International Relations Department, and Kristina Balun Vrtarić.

The DGINS conference is regarded as the European Union’s most important forum for the exchange of views on the future and development of the European statistical system. Challenges and opportunities for official statistics in the context of climate change and the energy crisis are the topics of this year’s conference.

In the context of the Conference, the Director-General took part in a panel discussion on the topic of "Building a climate analysis system with statistics”, in which emerging needs for climate change-related statistics and identifying user needs for data were discussed. The Director-General pointed out that cooperation at both national and European level is of utmost importance in data production and that the inclusion of statistical institutes in developing strategies at the national level is essential.

The DGINS conference was established on 15 July 1953 in Luxembourg. It is held once a year to discuss important topics related to statistical methods and processes used to produce European statistics. It is hosted each year by a different national statistical institute and this year the conference was organised by the Central Statistics Office of Ireland.



The Croatian Bureau of Statistics was honoured to host the DGINS conference in 2025, and to this end will hold informal meetings with previous organisers.

As part of the Conference, the European Statistical System Committee meeting will be held on 19 and 20 October 2023, where five proposals for implementing acts will be voted on.
