Croatian Bureau of Statistics hosted high-level meeting

Tourism statistics in focus

From 23 to 24 April 2024, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics hosts the high-level meeting between the delegations of statistical offices of Cyprus, Greece and Malta.

The aim of the meeting is to continue European cooperation in the domain of official statistics, which intensified in November 2022 after the high-level meeting organised by the National Statistics Office Malta.

The topic of the meeting is tourism, which will cover a number of relevant areas such as defining national tourism policies and relevant administrative systems, multiple data sources, traditional tourism statistics in relation to experimental one, sustainable tourism and tourism sattelite accounts.

On the first day of the meeting, Lidija Brković, Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, greeted attendees and provided a brief insight into operations and past projects of the Bureau in the domain of tourism statistics.  After the Director General, the attendees were addressed by Nives Jurič, Senior Advisor of the Minister of tourism and sports, who presented the first Tourism Act passed in Croatia in an attempt to make tourism sustainable, while the eVisitor system was brought closer to attendees by Anton Brkić, Head of the eVisitor and Applicable Solutions Department Croatian National Tourist Board, and Saša Popovac, Head of the Marketing and Analytics Department Croatian National Tourist Board.



On the second day of the meeting, representatives of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics Suzana Šamec, Director of the Macroeconomic Statistics Directorate, and Ivana Škoro, Senior Advisor in the Input-Output Tables Department, presented the calculation of tourism satellite accounts. After that, presentations were held by representatives of the Institute for Tourism Damir Krešić, Managing Director, Neven Ivandić, member of the Management Board, and Zrinka Marušić, member of the Research Team, who initiated the attendees into the concept of sustainable tourism in Croatia. There were also debates about innovative methodologies, such as tourism satellite accounts, as well as the necessity of establishing modern tourist statistics systems.

The attendees exchanged their experiences and considered possibilities for further cooperation and joint strategic orientation. The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences as well as to set up guidelines for the future cooperation and development of tourism statistics in the European Union.
