Director General participates in a panel discussion on the topic “Statistics and False Facts”

Lidija Brković, Director General of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, participates in the 64th World Statistics Congress (WSC) organised by the International Statistical Institute (ISI), which takes place in Ottawa from 16 to 20 July 2023.

It is the world’s largest event dedicated to statistics, held every two years dating back to 1887, in order to bring together heads of statistical offices, statisticians and scientists and share good practices in collecting data and promoting statistics.

Many of the problems that today’s society faces, such as misinformation, policies related to artificial intelligence, climate change and inequality, are the themes of this year’s World Statistics Congress.

Within the Congress, the Director General led a panel discussion on the topic “Democracy Dies in Darkness without Official Data”, and as a panellist she participated in the panel discussion on the topic “Statistics and False Facts – Session in Honour of the Late Professor Tim Holt” where she talked about the importance of statistical data and their impact on internal and external policy making and on the business world. She also tackled the growing spread of false facts and misinterpretation of statistical data, as a result of the digital revolution, and highlighted good practices undertaken by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics to demonstrate to the general public the importance of correctly interpreting statistical data by promoting statistical literacy, in particular among the key partners such as the media, civil society associations, educational and health institutions and members of scientific and academic communities.

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) is a professional association of statisticians that was founded in 1885 and today has about four thousand members from government organisations, academic community and the private sector, and in 1853, in Brussels, it started organising the World Statistics Congress.
