1.7 million inhabitants aged 15 and over are active, the City of Zagreb has the highest share of employed persons

The 2021 Census data on economic activity and migrations are released

Out of a total of 3.3 million inhabitants aged 15 and over in the Republic of Croatia, 1.7 million, or 51.7%, are active, while 1.6 million, or 48.3%, are inactive. These are the data of the Census of Population, Households and Dwellings 2021, which also show that the share of employed persons in active population is 94.8%, while the share of unemployed persons is 5.2%. According to the structure by sex, the share of women in active population is slightly smaller than the share of men and amounts to 48.0%, while their share in employed population is 47.9%. The share of employed persons in the total number of persons aged 15 and over in the Republic of Croatia is 48.9%.

The total number of inactive persons aged 15 and over includes 1.0 million (63.5%) retired persons, among whom 55.5% are women and 44.5% are men, while the number of pupils and students is 202.7 thousand (12.7%).

Compared to the 2011 Census data, according to which the number of inhabitants aged 15 and over was higher than in 2021 by slightly more than 313 thousand (8.6%), the number of economically active persons dropped by 4.5% in 2021, and the number of economically inactive persons by 12.7%.



The City Of Zagreb has the highest share of employed persons in the total number of persons aged 15 and over, 54.6%, followed by the County of Istria, with 53.3%, the County of Varaždin and the County of Zagreb, with 52.1% each, while the counties with the smallest share of employed persons in the total number of persons aged 15 and over are the Counties of Vukovar-Srijem and Slavonski Brod-Posavina, with 41.3% each, and the County of Virovitica-Podravina, with 41.9%.

Observed according to industry sections, the highest number of employed persons is in the section Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and (15.5%), followed by Manufacturing (14.8%) and Accommodation and food service activities (8.0%).

Industry sections with a large share of employed women are Human health and social work activities (80.6%) and Education (78.4%), while industries with the largest share of employed men are Construction (89.5%) and Mining and quarrying (88.7%).


 
Observing employed persons according to their occupation, the 2021 Census data show that service and sales workers predominate, with a share of 20.3%, followed by professionals, with 16.4%, and technicians and associate professionals, with 16.1%. A slightly lower share of persons is employed in crafts and related trades, 11.9%, and the lowest share is employed in armed forces occupations, 0.9%.



According to the 2021 Census data, the number of inhabitants of the Republic of Croatia born in the country amounts to 3.4 million (87.8%), which is two percentage points more than in the 2011 Census (86.3%), while the number of inhabitants born abroad amounts to 12.2%, which is two percentage points less than in the 2011 Census.
